This fall, our Assisted Living community participated in the Music & Memory research program. Through this program we were able to obtain individual iPods for our residents and loaded them with personalized music play lists through iTunes.
During an 8 week period our residents had one on one time with a staff member and listened to their music while staff recorded their response to the music over a 10 minute period. We found that our residents truly enjoyed listening to a personally selected play list and continued to enjoy this time even after the research period concluded. Our staff was able to report that overall moods were greatly improved during and after individual music therapy sessions. Music has the ability to help soothe or energize, make you happy or sad, or reduce tension and anxieties. We have seen music evoke a response even in the final stages of life. The benefits of personalized music therapy has been well studied and proves to be beneficial for our elderly, especially those with dementia.
